Our 11-year-old daughter is really into geology and outdoors, so this seemed perfect. She spent hours in the park and actually found a dime from 1965—she was thrilled! The LCD screen is nice, even though it’s small. I like that you can switch between modes easily. One thing: the coil is only 6 inches, so it covers less ground than adult models, but that also means it’s more manageable for small hands. Would recommend for curious kids.

Bought it as a gift for my nephew’s 8th birthday. Setup was straightforward — took maybe 3 minutes to get it working. The all metal mode is great for beginners; he was finding nails and screws in the garden right away. It’s lightweight enough that he can carry it around for an hour without complaining. The only thing I’d improve is the sensitivity—it doesn’t pick up tiny targets like a tiny gold earring, but for the price it’s a solid starter.
